CLEOPATRA

Claudette Colbert, Warren William

Universal Pictures; Directed by Cecil B. DeMille

Black and White; Not Rated; 102 minutes; 1934

DeMille's version of CLEOPATRA may strike as somewhat different than Shakespeare's or Shaw's. An extravagant ode to seduction, it successfully converts the ludicrous into the overwhelming. The barge scene is possibly DeMille's greatest tour-de-force, combining the most insane indulgences with a totally convincing sequence of arousal.
