Luchino Visconti's film adaptation of the classic Thomas Mann novella was a tremendous personal triumph for the acclaimed Italian director, for whom it culminated a life-long ambition. Dirk Bogarde plays the central character, an artist whose search for purity and beauty leads him to Venice where his infatuation with a young boy's beauty robs the man of his dignity.
