In this update of the classic 1949 adventure film, zoologist Gregg O'Hara (Bill Paxton) stumbles upon a 15-foot gorilla while exploring the remote Pangani Mountains in Central Africa. Fearsome and dangerous when provoked, the ape is tame in the hands of Jill (Charlize Theron) who raised the gorilla and named him Joe. Threatened by poachers, Gregg and Jill move Joe to a California animal preserve, only to discover that his newfound notoriety has made him the target of a ruthless poacher.
