| A love story that combines elements of danger, heroism, sensuality, and violence in luxurious Tuscan setting, based on a novella by W. Somerset Maugham. Florence, 1938: The remains of Tuscany's Anglo-American expatriate community are in blithe denial of the impending WWII threat. Mary Panton, an English beauty recently widowed and left penniless, is staying at a sumptuous Renaissance villa. Sir Edgar Swift, a friend 25 years older than Mary, proposed marriage. She asks for a few days to consider his offer. At a dinner party, Mary gets the attentions of three different men, including rakish, charming American playboy Rowley Flint. A fervent and impulsive sexual encounter will lead to violence and tragedy, life-or-death actions, and, ultimately, love. | |||||
