Not satisfied as her present situation as a wife in an unsatisfactory marriage, Madame Wu (Luo Yan) decides to pursue her intellectual interests. Along the way she meets and falls in love with Andre (Willem Dafoe), an American missionary. This lush romance that takes place in 1930s China is based on the novel by Pearl S. Buck.
