The Long Run

Armin Mueller-Stahl, Nthati Moshesh, Paterson Joseph
Universal Pictures; Directed by Jean Stewart
Rated R; 113 minutes; 2001

This subtle, but powerful story about the passion to win and discipline needed to get there, takes place against a South African backdrop. Mueller-Stahl is a veteran track coach who loses his day job at a brick making factory. He thinks this will cost him his chance at getting his runners to the Comrades Marathon (a tortuous 90 kilometer race that few entrants even finish) when a naturally talented but untrained girl named Kristina walks into his life. She is skeptical of his radical methods at first - controlling every aspect of her life from her diet to her personal relationships - and her independent spirit makes her push him away. Eventually, his passion for winning that once broke her down builds her back up into a confident and powerful runner with a drive to win the Comrades. Their relationship, while remaining that of an athlete and coach, has shades wof modern day South Africa with old ideas passing away and boundaries being tested and surpassed.
