This film is a true story based on the novel by Julia Alvarez about three sisters who were in fierce opposition to the dictatorship of General Leonidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. They meet the dictator at a ball and he makes an unwelcome pass at Minerva (Hayek), one of the sisters. After her embarrassing rejection of him, Minerva further jeopardizes herself by becoming a radical opponent the government and starts posting flyers against the stockpiling of guns. In 1960 the bodies of these sisters were found at the bottom of a cliff. The official report was that this was an accident.
